That happened two years ago.
Of course, I myself am wondering, 'but how can this be? I'm supposed to be dead! Like blood splattered over a mountain kind of dead.' But I'm not.
And this is why.
It was as if a couple of minutes had passed and my world wasn't so dark anymore. Actually, it was blinding. Why? Where the heck am I?!
"Hey! She's finally awake!" an unfamiliar masculine voice exclaimed.
"That's amazing, I'm going to call Director Warren." a female voice spoke.
I opened my eyes wider and saw that I was in a dark grey room with about five lights on me. There were people around me staring in shock. I was so confused. I was lying on something extremely cold but soft. I wanted to look around more but my head would not move. I could only move my eyes. I saw machines everywhere in the room. People were sitting and standing and all were dressed in khakis and white lab coats. Light chatter filled the air but everyone was still staring at me!
'She's alive' one whispered.
'Now, I've seen everything' one more added.
There were many other comments in languages unknown to me.
"Uhh, hello?" I asked hesitantly as my eyes darted around the strange room.
"She speaks English. Ok. Hi," the same masculine voice I heard earlier replied.
I glanced to the right and met a tall man, probably in his late forties. He had some grey streaks in his full head of brown hair. His slightly wrinkled face was pulled into a warm smile. He moved from his position at the side of me to the front.
"Do . . . you know what happened? Do you remember anything?" he questioned gently.
"I fell off a mountain and I'm supposed to be dead. I am dead right?" I inquired.
"No you're not dead, obviously." he answered chuckling.
"Where am I? Who are you?"
"You are at the T.R.L.U.O, the Thailand Research Lab for Unusual Occurrences. My name is Michael." he answered.
I jerked my head towards the double doors in the room when they suddenly opened. In walked a woman dressed like everyone else with a very elderly and stern looking man. His stride reflected his power and authority but was decreased by a limp, he wore a night black trench coat, and held a cane in his hand. This man let off a seriously scary vibe and I could see the other people in the room cowering away from him. He moved closer and stood before me, surprisingly with a genuinely friendly expression.
He whispered to Michael in another language and when he responded, he said in a gruff voice: "Hello young lady, I'm Director Warren."
"Hi . . . uhh can you help me get up and explain to me what happened here?" I asked immediately.
His eyes sparkled with amusement. "Yeah we can do that, now that we're sure you're alive,"
"Ok." I plainly answered but my eyes darted around the room in confusion.
"But, do you even know what happened to you?" he asked, scrunching his eyebrows as he limped closer to me.
"No?" I said unsurely.
"For over six months my team and I spent hours trying to unfreeze you without killing you in the process," he sighed. "It seemed as if the ice did not want to release you so we used brute force. So we tried and tried and then after those months, the ice began to melt itself. We then started to speed up the process with those big machines over there and it took us three more months to fully unfreeze you,"
He pointed to the left and I saw some very large and wide machines with different knobs and levers, they had huge tubes sticking out of them and some more tubes connected to the wall.
"While unfreezing you, your heart could not be properly monitored so we were not always sure if you were alive or not. When we did get the chance to take your pulse on a monitor it was going extremely slow," he continued. "But at some point... your heart stopped. And you died, essentially. But by some miracle were able to revive you." He took a deep breath.
"The more you were freed the faster your heart rate would be. About four months ago, we got you in your current state and from that time you were in a coma so whatever injuries had are practically healed. You were adamant on not waking up but then you did, so that's good."
That's a lot to take in. I almost died, was saved by ice, transported from Nepal to Thailand and was unfrozen by a whole bunch of genius scientists.
"So who found me?" I asked.
"A group of geological excavators were studying the constant growth of Mount Everest and found you. They contacted us and two months later you arrived here." he answered.
The room was silent for a moment as I took in everything. My life got really weird, really fast. All because I was kicked out of my house for being lazy.
So, in conclusion, this is my parents' fault . . . yep let's go with that!
"Excuse me if I'm overstepping your boundaries but where did you get that?" Director Warren pointed to my neck.
'Thrift Store'.
"Thrift Store." I said immediately after.
Wait! That was not me, I didn't think that or say it. How did that happen . . . and whose thought was that?
Ok, I really needed to be alone right now to gather my thoughts.
"So can I get up now?" I asked.
"Yes, right away." Director Warren started instructing people on what to do, and probably, how to do it in many different languages.
The scientists walked to different machines and computers and did different things on them. One lady came up to me and pulled some tubes and wires out and off of my arms and legs. I had no idea they were there until that was done. Only then did I notice the dripper and pulse monitor to my right. And about two minutes later I was helped up my numerous scientists.
When I was finally able to stand on my feet with Michael's help, I saw that I was laying on a hospital bed. I looked at the ground and searched for traces of ice. I saw none but did see a very large square on the ground, we stood on it and it covered half of the floor. It was a stain from the wetness of the ice. No wonder they took so long to unfreeze me, the block must have been huge.
"Can I be alone for a bit? I need to gather my thoughts." I asked quietly.
Director Warren nodded, told everyone to get out, and I was left alone.
The hairs on the nape of my neck suddenly raised and goosebumps crawled its way down my spine. For a second the air in the room became really cold and a sense of unease settled itself in my stomach. I instinctively looked around suspiciously before my thoughts drifted back to the matter at hand. Where did that come from?
Immediately I looked down and felt around my neck. What was Director Warren looking at? Then my hand caught something. I pulled it up and I saw a crystal attached to a chain. It was shaped like a diamond, and slightly rugged as if it were cut by an inexperienced jeweler. It had a faint blue glow emitting from it.
What is this? Where did it come from? Definitely not from a thrift store.
"You're an idiot, you know that," there was that voice again. It was feminine and had a Russian accent.
"What why? Who said that?!" I panicked.
"You lied, climbed a mountain and practically died," it said.
"Ok, maybe that was not my finest moment but what or who are you?" I spun in a circle desperate to find the voice.
"Hey chill, I'm not going to eat you."
"Who are you?"
"Look down at your hand," the voice said.
I looked down and saw the crystal I was holding.
"Hi! I'm Gemma," the voice said in its Russian accent which caused the crystal to glow brighter.
I yelped and let go of the necklace. "What are you?"
"Firstly, I'm not a crystal, I'm a gem, so stop thinking about that," she said sassily.
"Ok," my voice shook. Fear ran through me and caused my hands to shake. My head started to pound from the million thoughts running through my mind as I tried to think of a logical explanation for why a gem is insulting me. I really think that fall messed up my mind.
"Secondly, I'm an EverGem, and thirdly you're not crazy. See. . ." she said to me.
"See wha-aww!" I felt a very sharp prick in my leg which caused me to jump.
"What was that for?" I snapped looking down the gem while rubbing my leg.
"Proof that you're not crazy," she answered back.
Great! I have a rude and insane gem and I don't even know how long it'll last.
"I'm not insane, I'm just very rowdy," she read my thoughts.
"You can read my thoughts?" I asked.
"Yep, I'm linked to you telepathically," she said.
"Uh, so can you tell me who exactly you are and why you're here?" I made my way over to a chair and sat down. I was so shaken up I didn't trust my legs to support me.
"My name is Geminia, or in simpler terms Gemma. I am an EverGem from the highest point of Mount Everest and you are my permanent host." She introduced herself.
"Host! What do you mean, host?" I screamed.
"That's all you pick up? Yes I am stuck to you forever and with me being here you have a great responsibility to maintain," she explained.
"Please explain," I groaned, rubbing my eyebrows due to my headache.
"You are now a magical warrior with ice powers," she calmly explained.
"Ok sure, so do I get an ice castle and a singing voice?" I asked rolling my eyes.
"I'm serious! This is no fairy tale, this is real and it's going to get complicated fast, so pay attention." she scowled at me.
"Aye sir." I mockingly saluted.
"It was around the time that mount Everest was formed. We were all made in a volcano. A volcano can produce gems, crystals, diamonds, the whole lot and that is how I-or we were created-"
"We?" I cut her off.
"Hush child," she snapped, "anyways the volcano only produced six gems and somehow we were alive? I don't fully know, we spent years trying to find out why but gave up. After that, we sat there for centuries trying to figure out what to do but then there was an eruption and we all got separated. I was left alone at the top of the volcano. Things happened, plates shifted and twenty million years later I was moved to Mount Everest. I waited centuries again and then you showed up with your deceiving self and I knew I had to do something but I couldn't do anything until you fell off the mountain, I still don't know how I saved you but I did and now we're here," she sighed dramatically.
I was silent for a while as I took in her words.
