Chapter 2

Mia watched as Tang Yun stood there, not turning around or uttering a word. She walked over to him, standing three steps behind him yet again, she spoke, "Tang Yun, let's get a divorce."

Tang Yun didn't respond or say anything, he simply walked out of the bedroom. Just when Mia didn't know what to do, a loud bang echoed from the study next door, indicating the intensity with which Tang Yun had slammed the door.

Mia bit her lip and followed him out of the room, knocking on the study door. Seeing Tang Yun immersed in his work. Hesitating slightly, she began to speak again, this time with a more assertive tone, "Since you don't love me, you even hate me; let's divorce and set each other free."

"Freedom? Are you making a joke?" Tang Yun raised his head and mocked Mia, "Do you know what divorcing me means? It means that your family, the Mi family, will have no interaction with the Tang family. Your parents will no longer be able to get a high living expense from me. Are you sure they will let you divorce me?"

Mention of her parents made Mia shiver. Everything that led her to this situation was because of them. From her childhood till now, her parents dictated every part of her life to the minutest detail, even what she ate and wore daily.

Mia felt like a puppet with no self-conscious, manipulated by her parents before marriage and trapped in this mansion after it, completely isolated from the world.

Seeing Mia's reaction, Tang Yun knew he touched her vulnerability and calculated that she would never divorce him. This arrogance made him even more contemptuous of Mia.

"If you want to divorce, I can sign the papers, but first, convince your parents, especially your father. If he agrees, I won't object." Tang Yun knew Mia's family would not agree to the divorce, which is why he could propose such a term confidently.

"My marriage is mine, my life is mine, and if I want to get divorced..." Mia started speaking softly but lacked conviction, especially when she saw Tang Yun's mocking smile, she was unable to speak the rest.

"Get out, only come back to discuss divorce when your parents agree." Tang Yun said impatiently. Assuming her parents would never agree to the divorce, even if they did, he had to figure out how to explain his situation to his family, as his marriage affects not only him and Mia but also impacts the company's stock prices and his family's reputation.

Mia tightened her lips as she watched Tang Yun resumed his work. She turned slowly and left the study, not noticing the deep gaze Tang Yun tossed at her after she left.

Exhausted physically and emotionally, Mia went downstairs and made coffee for Tang Yun in the kitchen. Even though Tang Yun treated her poorly, she did not shirk her responsibilities. Instead of a wife, she felt more like a servant, taking care of Tang Yun.

After making the coffee, Mia walked into the study and left the coffee by his side. Then she quietly left the study. This had become a routine; whenever Tang Yun was working at home, she prepared coffee for him.

Back in her room, Mia went to the balcony once again. The view of the Seine River's banks was as beautiful as ever at night, but she was too preoccupied with the thoughts of her impending divorce to enjoy it. Even though she had thought about divorcing before, she never had the courage to say it out loud. No one knew how much courage it took for her to utter the words.

But voicing her intentions to divorce did not lighten her mood; on the contrary, it became heavier. Leaving aside whether her family would agree to the divorce, her father's angry face is frightening to think about. Concerns about what life will be like post-divorce? With Tang Yun's disdain, she'd probably not get a penny in alimony, and there's no hope of returning to her parental home. She doesn't even have a confidante she can rely on; all this made her feel truly pathetic.

The night ran deep, Mia lay in bed with no hint of sleep in sight. Suddenly, she heard the sound of the door opening, causing her to tense up entirely. As she expected, the rustling noise of clothing being shed followed shortly after, and in no time, Tang Yun was in bed. Without even offering Mia a chance to speak, he had already begun to pull off her nightgown, stifling his own desires onto her.

Mia felt the urge to vomit from the repulsion. She wanted to reject Tang Yun, feeling disgusting. Nevertheless, she knew she was not entitled to reject anything Tang Yun did to her. She was a woman bought by the Tang family, and she had no right to her own emotions and consciousness.

In the dark, Mia's tears uncontrollably slid down from the corner of her eyes, disappearing into her locks. To keep Tang Yun from noticing her emotional discrepancy, she bit her lower lip so hard, enduring until Tang Yun finished and rolled off her, falling into a deep sleep beside her.

Mia didn't opt to put on the discarded nightgown from the floor back in the darkness. After all, the nightgown was torn by Tang Yun and destined to land in the trash bin. Barefooted, she headed to the bathroom, guided by her sense of familiarity. She soaked herself in the bathtub, trying to wash off the dirty feeling left on her by Tang Yun.

It wasn't until the water in the bathtub gradually cooled down that Mia finally stepped out. She stood under the showerhead, allowing the water to continue cleansing her body, she didn't know for how long. Eventually, she left the bathroom in her bathrobe. Looking at Tang Yun, fast asleep on the bed, she quietly slipped out of the bedroom.

Heading downstairs to the kitchen, she poured a cup of warm water, then fetched a bottle of pills from a cabinet drawer. She took out two pills, swallowed them with water, and then put away the medicine.

She knew very well that Tang Yun would not want her to get pregnant. From the first night they were intimate, Tang Yun had made it clear, he did not want Mia to bear his child. Hence, Mia had been taking contraceptives. However, Tang Yun's return was always uncertain, often being absent from home for months, that's why Mia had prepared emergency contraception.

Not only did Tang Yun not want her to get pregnant, but she also did not want to. Any child she bore for Tang Yun was destined to be unloved. She could bear living in agony alone. She did not want to bring a child into this world to suffer along with her.
