Conrad's haughty gaze shifted away from her. It was clear that he didn't believe her, but he didn't continue to object.
Mr. Harrell frowned. "Kyndal, you really don't have to worry about this foolish boy. My stance is still the same: you'll only be the wife to my family's heir."
Alivia hurriedly refused. "Grandpa Harrell, please don't. I'm going to graduate from college soon, and I'm busy with my thesis and finding a job. I don't have time to think about getting married. Besides, the success of marriage still depends on some fate. I still have much to explore in the future, so who knows if I meet someone better than Conrad?"
"If only that would happen," Conrad cut in coldly. Still, when he heard her say all this, he felt a little weird.
Now, since Kyndal had already affirmed her stance, Mr. Harrell naturally could not argue further. He looked at Conrad with exasperated eyes and solemnly promised, "Kyndal, your grandfather and I have been good friends for many years. The two of us have always hoped that our two families could grow closer to each other this way. So before you meet someone you truly love, my promise to you about this marriage will still stand."
"Thank you, Grandpa Harrell," Alivia sighed. It wouldn't be easy to change the old man's mind in such a short period of time. Anyway, it was just a promise, not forcing them to get married immediately. She would just have to delay it and wait for an opportunity to rid herself from this situation entirely.
"Hmph." Conrad snorted coldly. It was obvious he was mocking Kyndal's quick compromise.
Alivia was getting angry. So what if he was alarmingly attractive? He couldn't get away with everything. She turned around to glare at him, expression like an angry kitten. Surprisingly, she looked quite adorable mad.
Conrad glanced at her and quickly looked away the next second. He would never admit to himself that he found her refreshingly cute in that moment.
Since entering the ward with his grandfather, Kyndal had not pestered him even once. She had not looked at him save for the first moment when he entered the ward.
It was the woman's restraint that surprised Conrad.
However, he only treated this 'performance' as a new tactic of hers to manipulate him, never really considering her change in attitude to be genuine.
The atmosphere in the ward was now tense. Just then a young man came in. When he saw Kyndal, he first showed a happy expression. "I heard it all, Kyndal. Grandpa Harrell has already offered you this marriage, why not go along with it?"
Then, he walked up to Mr. Harrell with a grateful expression. "Mr. Harrell, we're really grateful that you've been able to find time to visit Kyndal."
Mr. Harrell was not interested in him whatsoever. He just said indifferently, "You're welcome." Then he turned to Elian and said, "I'll leave with Conrad first. I'm sure you and your family have much to discuss."
After that, he looked at Kyndal with a smile on her face. "I'm keeping my word, Kyndal."
"Don't think that you can succeed in your plans just because you have grandfather's help. No one can force me to do anything I don't want to do," Conrad immediately retorted, his tone fierce and words resolute.
"What are you going on about again?" Mr. Harrell was annoyed as he turned to glare at Conrad. If he had a stick in hand right now, he would probably teach the young man a lesson.
"Grandpa, let's let this matter go, okay? For my sake," Kyndal hurriedly interrupted. She didn't want to make the grandfather-and-son quarrel.
"You're truly a wise woman, Kyndal. It's Conrad's loss for not knowing how to treat you right," Mr. Harrell sighed.
"Grandpa, no matter what happens between Conrad and I, you will always be my grandpa. This will never change." Kyndal smiled. The two soon left the ward, letting Kyndal glare at the young man who had just come in.
If he hadn't stirred up trouble, everyone at least could have maintained some diplomacy. Now they had gotten back to step one with his meddling.
As a result, Conrad left with his face dripping with sarcasm, even looking at Kyndal with disdain. In his heart, she was probably a shameless woman scheming to get her way.
Upon seeing Kyndal's angry expression, the young man suddenly slapped himself on the cheek. "Oh dear, it's all my fault. I thought you all had reached an agreement on this whole thing..."
Elian was very understanding. "Tenley, it's not your fault. You care about your sister after all."
Hearing the conversation between the two, Kyndal looked up and met the young man's eyes. In a flash, some memories that didn't belong to her suddenly came to mind.
Her name was Kyndal, only daughter of Elian Pratt, the president of the Pratt Group. The refined woman beside them who cared about her deeply was her mother, Phoebe.
The annoying young man in front of her was her half-brother, Tenley Pratt, a result of Elian Pratt's hedonistic years.
After Tenley moved in with the Pratt family, the relationship between Phoebe and Elian began to rupture. Fortunately, Phoebe later gave birth to a son, Rhys, which helped ease their relationship.
Seeing Kyndal not buy his account and continued glaring at him angrily, Tenley began to make his move. "Kyndal, were you really going to give up your life for Conrad Harrell? Don't you know how big this scene has become? All of our company stocks have dropped because of it..." Tenley looked at Kyndal and said with regret.
Why did his endearing words sound more like accusations? Elian's anger, which had just calmed down, erupted once again as he listened to Tenley. "Kyndal, I'm warning you: if you embarrass me again, I will send you abroad and never allow you to come back."
Seeing Elian scolding his daughter again, Phoebe grew upset. She pointed at Elian's and Tenley's and cried, "Sending her away to do what? To let your b*stard son take the Pratt Group for himself? I'm telling you, Elian Pratt, you'll not succeed as long as I live!"
Elian began to have a headache again. "Phoebe, don't be unreasonable. Obviously it's our daughter being a nuisance-"
"A nuisance? You're the nuisance! You and your b*stard son-!" Phoebe shouted at Elian and Tenley.
As a young and arrogant man, after being scolded like this, Tenley actually maintained the gentle smile on his face, and even said kindly, "Ma'am, you can slap me a couple times if it'll help dissipate your anger."
No wonder Alivia felt uncomfortable as soon as she saw Tenley. It turned out that he was a deeply hypocritical person.
Now, Alivia's thoughts were becoming clearer, though the ward remained a ruckus.
Suicide? Jamie Wheeler was the one who had killed her, so why was the police coming to the conclusion that she had committed suicide?
Kyndal stared at the TV screen and clenched her hands into fists. No, she couldn't let Jamie get away with this. She wanted to find evidence and give herself from her past life some justice.
In her previous life, Jamie had pushed her off the 18th storey of a building all because of his own benefit and wealth. She had died on the spot, skull shattering and all.
But now she was reborn in another woman's body who went by the name Kyndal Pratt. She was no longer Alivia Booth.
The remnants of her memories told her that the situation wasn't so black and white. Kyndal had eaten vitamins the other day, which Phoebe had prepared for her specifically due to her delicate constitution from lack of proper nutrition and exercise. It could be eaten like a snack without fear of overdosing.
Because of this, Kyndal had eaten a whole handful of the vitamins while in a bad mood, and fainted. When she woke up, well, she was faced with all this.
Needless to say, someone had replaced her vitamins with sleeping pills, making her overdose. They likely wanted for her to die from this, or use this matter to ruin her reputation.
Either way, it seemed that they had achieved their goal. As for the mastermind behind the plot... could it have been Tenley?
