Unending Adoration: The Commander's Wife

Chapter 2

Zhou Yujiao was actually quite unwilling to let it go. She wanted to continue asking, but Li Zaozao had already turned her head away, appearing as if she didn't want to deal with her anymore.

If she continued to make a fuss, it would make her seem like the other woman.

Zhou Yujiao was so angry that her chest heaved vigorously. In the end, she clenched the picture in her hand and forcefully swallowed her resentment.

Wait and see!

She didn't believe that once they arrived at the army base, Chen Yiyong would honestly be interested in this skinny pole!

On the side, Zhang Aiping, who was leading one child and holding another, had watched the entire scene, so astonished that her mouth couldn't close.

My goodness, she finally realized that the fiancés of these two women were actually the same person!

They were looking for the same person, and even ended up in the same compartment. What was going on?

But from the bottom of her heart, Zhang Aiping subconsciously chose to trust Li Zaozao.

There were no other reasons, mainly because Li Zaozao looked like her younger sister at home, while Zhou Yujiao not only looked down on people, but also showed an arrogant expression to everyone she met, always carrying two suitcases when she went out.

Clearly giving off the airs of a rich capitalists' daughter.

In these times, capitalists were the targets of public criticism!

"Little sister, are you cold?" Zhang Aiping noticed Li Zaozao shivering from the cold, and put the two children on the bed.

She then pulled out a thick blanket from her bag and placed it next to Li Zaozao.

She smiled in a simple and honest manner: "Here, I have a blanket for you. Make do with it for now, don't freeze."

"The weather in the Great Northwest is rather harsh."

Li Zaozao was actually afraid that her muddy clothes would soil other people's blankets, but she was indeed cold now. Unable to refuse the offer, she gratefully accepted it, "Thank you, sister. I'll wash and return your blanket once I'm done using it."

In the opposite bed, Zhou Yujiao laying with her back to them, let out a disdainful 'tch' sound.

In order to sooth Li Zaozao, Zhang Aiping gently patted her shoulder, providing silent consolation.

But Li Zaozao didn’t pay any attention to Zhou Yujiao’s disdain. She once again directed her gaze out the window.

She had always lived in a coastal city in her previous life and had long since grown tired of the sea. This was her first experience seeing the landscape of the Northwest, including its large snow-capped mountains.

The endless landscape seemed to improve her mood.

She even couldn't help but start fantasizing what it would be like to live beneath these snow mountains...

The subsequent few hours in the small, cramped carriage were exceptionally quiet.

During the journey, Zhou Yujiao had been constantly showing off her fiance, but now, she didn't want to say a word.

Soon, the train arrived at the station. An army-issued green truck picked them up from the station and drove them to the plains' garrison.

The garrison housed two regiments and took up a lot of space.

The soldier who drove the truck parked it, jumped down, clapped his hands, and shouted: "Ladies, we have arrived. You can get off now! Sister Zhang, stay here with your child and these two other ladies for a while. I'm going to fetch the political commissar to meet you!"

Having spoken, he turned around and ran off.

"We're finally here..."

Li Zaozao slowly stood up, lightly rubbed her now-flattened buttocks, then picked up her small bundle and got off the vehicle.

Glancing around, she began to observe this new surrounding.

The military camp seemed a bit different from her previous imaginations. Besides the sight of uniformed soldiers everywhere, there wasn't much difference from the outside world.

If there was any noticeable variance, that would be the number of horses here.

She hadn't been off the vehicle for long, and she had already seen several military personnel riding past her on horseback.

Cavalry units have been abolished in modern times, and it wouldn't be long before they're phased out in this era.

Li Zaozao didn't ponder this deeply. Regardless, it had nothing to do with her.

"Sis, could you help me hold Gousheng?"

Hearing the voice, Li Zaozao turned around and saw Zhang Aiping standing on the vehicle, holding up a two or three-year-old child towards her.

She quickly reached out to hold the toddler.

"So, little guy, you're named Gousheng, huh?"

Li Zaozao's gaze uncontrollably drifted downwards.

Dressed in split-crotch pants, Gousheng's tiny weenie swaying adorably.

Gousheng pursed his lips as if scared, not giving a response.

When Zhang Aiping safely got off the vehicle, Gousheng seemed to have found his savior. He quickly reached out his arms, eagerly calling out "Mom", eager to return to his mother's embrace.

Zhang Aiping took over and patted his small butt, chiding, "You little rascal, why are you ignoring your Auntie?"

Then, she turned her head to look at Xiaoli who was holding her hand, smiling, "Xiaoli, we'll be able to see your daddy soon. We'll be living here from now on, isn't that exciting?"

Xiaoli's eyes were filled with curiosity as she pointed at a group of horses in the distance, asking, "Mom, there are so many big horses over there, can I ride on them in the future?"

"Well, ask your Dad about that!"

Looking at this family of three with thrilled expressions, Li Zaozao couldn't help but feel envious.

She didn't know how long she'd be able to stay here, especially since the brigade her original identity belonged to was experiencing a drought and was struggling with food shortage.

In this era, getting a job in the city was not an easy matter. If she were to return, she'd probably have to endure hard life in the countryside for a decade.

By that time, she would be nearly thirty years old. Not to mention riding the wave of prosperity, even if she was trampled by the era, there was no possibility for her to prosper.

"How wonderful would it be if I could stay and work in the army…" Li Zaozao mused to herself, but then she dejectedly shook her head, dismissing the idea.

Before long, Zhou Yujiao also got out of the vehicle.

Seeing someone walking in this direction, she picked up two suitcases and walked a few steps forward, positioning herself in front of Li Zaozao.

"What a blockhead," Li Zaozao quietly shot the middle finger but didn’t say anything more. She just moved a few steps aside, curiously craning her neck to look ahead.

She saw a middle-aged man striding towards them. When he saw Zhang Aiping and the others, he immediately shouted loudly, "Dog leftovers! Xiaoli!"

"Daddy!" Xiaoli heard the shout and excitedly ran towards the man.

Zhang Aiping also walked up with her son in her arms, her face overflowing with a smile, "My man, I've brought our son and daughter here."

Fang Jianshe hoisted up both his son and daughter, planted a kiss on each of their cheeks, then turned to Zhang Aiping, "Aiping, you must be exhausted. I've tidied up the house, let's head back, you should get some rest!"

Just as Zhang Aiping was about to agree, she suddenly became aware of the presence of two other people behind her.

She quickly glanced over at the two individuals, then lightly pulled at Fang Jianshe's sleeve, quietly explaining the situation to him.

Fang Jianshe's countenance instantaneously turned serious, his brows furrowing.

"Such a thing happened? Ridiculous!"

Two fiancés! This is simply a backward practice from the old society!

Fang Jianshe tried keeping a straight face, "I will handle the matter. Aiping, you guys go and rest. Little Zheng, please take your sister-in-law to the family area."

After taking care of his family, he turned around to look at Li Zaozao and Zhou Yujiao.

The contrast between the two individuals was stark - one was a proud and fashionable young lady, the other a disheveled mess, looking like a beggar.

This contrast proved quite a shock for him.

After a moment of contemplation, he turned to one of the soldiers, "Xiao Zhao, go tell the battalion commander to meet me in the reception room. Tell him that I have something important to discuss, and he needs to hurry over here."

As the soldier left, the incredulous scenario provoked Fang Jianshe to mutter a curse under his breath, "Damn it. What a mess!"

Finally, he addressed Li Zaozao and Zhou Yujiao: "Follow me to the reception room as well. I promise you, this issue will be resolved."
