"Where am I? Didn't I get hit by a car? Am I dead?"
Haward was in a strange place. It was pitch black, he could not even see his own fingers.
Suddenly, an old man with a ruddy and youthful complexion appeared with a basket on his back. The old man had silver hair, but his face was not wrinkled at all. His skin was as smooth as a newborn baby's and his eyes were bright and sparkling.
He was looking at Haward with a gentle and tender look in his eyes. He said softly, "I am Ralph Ching. My descendant, since you are able to enter the spiritual realm, you are destined to meet me and take up my mantle. Remember, you have to practice medicine and help the world with it in the future."
After the old man finished his words, a ray of divine light burst from his eyes and went straight into Haward's.
All of a sudden, fragments of memories rushed into Haward's head. The torrential flooding of memories threatened to tear his brain apart.
Haward gritted his teeth and held on desperately. Like a boat veering through the raging waves in a storm, it was insurmountable. Eventually, his vision went black and he collapsed into a heap.
Haward didn't know how long it took for him to wake from the trance. When he did, his head throbbed with pain.
"I'm still alive."
Haward was stunned. He sat up on the cot and began to pick at the memories he was given.
An old yellowed book conjured up in Haward's mind. At a glance, the book exuded a sense of antiquity as though it was made ages ago.
There were three crude and dignified characters on its cover: Infinite Medical Book.
Haward's curiosity was piqued, and his attention was drawn to the book.
Suddenly, the book turned into a huge screen, on which different scenes flashed one after another.
It showed precious medical experiences, ways to perform acupuncture, talisman and spells, and Feng Shui and anthroposcopy...
Haward felt as though he had traveled thousands of years back in time and experienced medical knowledge with his ancestor. A sense of decorousness began to exude from him.
It was a kind of calm that could only be attained after going through the vicissitudes of life.
"This Infinite Medical Book is not only a treasured medical book but also an ancient Taoist cultivation guide."
Haward exclaimed inwardly and his eyes were wide open as he processed the knowledge given to him.
Then, he held his breath and regulated his Qi, mirroring the instructions in the Infinite Medical Book.
After a short while, he felt a thick current of warmth emerging in his abdominal cavity and slowly flowing into his limbs and scaling his bones.
He was overwhelmed with an extreme sensation of comfort and relaxation as the warmth surged through his entire being.
The exhaustion from the busy morning, the pain and numbness in his waist and back had been swept away in the blink of an eye. He felt as fresh as a daisy, bubbling with energy.
Haward was overjoyed. It was then that he was certain that all he had just experienced was real.
"Don't worry, my dear ancestor. I will take your precious inculcations to heart and be an ethical doctor. I will do my best to save people around the world and help the needy as much as possible,"
Haward swore to himself.
"Haward, you finally woke up."
The door swung open and a female nurse came in. Seeing that Haward could sit up, she breathed a deep sigh of relief.
"I am sorry to trouble you,"
Haward said apologetically.
"It's okay. You were hit by a car. Of course, we should attend to you. We haven't found the culprit yet, since he hit and ran, and there were no closed-circuit television around,"
The nurse said.
It turned out that Haward had been sent to the emergency department not long after he fell into a coma. When the nurses saw that Haward was the victim of the car accident, they immediately sent him to the ward.
"It doesn't matter. I'm fine,"
Haward said with a smile.
Infinite Medical Book contained medical cultivation techniques, including both traditional Chinese medical theories and cultivation spells. After being gifted the medical book, Haward's medical skills were now on par with those of famous medical experts.
With only a little effort on his side, he could have a thorough understanding of his own physical condition.
"Well, that's good. I'll go back to the emergency room then."
Seeing that Haward was in a good condition, the nurse left in a hurry. It was the peak hour in the hospital when the emergency department was desperately in need of manpower. It was not easy for her to sneak out and visit Haward.
Haward stretched and moved about for a bit on the bed and then got out of it.
"You got out of bed so soon. It seems that you're not injured seriously."
The door of the ward was opened, and in came a middle-aged man with a beer belly. He sported a white coat and spoke in a strange tone.
It was Jimmy Liu, the head of the department of the River City First People's Hospital.
He was the doctor who interviewed Haward the day before and made the decision to assign him to the emergency department subsequently. During the interview, he deliberately made things difficult for Haward. Fortunately, Haward had a solid grasp of medicine, so Jimmy could find no bone to pick with him.
"Since you're all right, you'd better go back to the emergency department to work,"
Jimmy glanced faintly at Haward and said nonchalantly.
"Whether I am fine or whether I am going back to work seems to have nothing to do with you, Chief Liu. If you are free, go for a ward round and show a bit of care to your patients."
Haward took a quick glance back at Jimmy. Then, he walked to the window and looked out into the distance.
"What do you mean? As a nurse in the hospital, at this peak hour, you not only refuse to do your job, but you put on this kind of air around your superior? Do you want this job or not?"
Jimmy was boiling. As the head of the department of the hospital, he was in such a high and powerful position that countless people had fawned over him. He had never been humiliated in such fashion, by a nurse no less.
If it was a powerful person with the background to boot, he would resign to his fate.
However, he could not tolerate such disrespect from a mere trainee nurse.
"Haha, I was hospitalized from a car crash and I paid for the hospital admission. That is to say, I am a patient, not a nurse in the hospital. It has nothing to do with being slothful."
"If I am considered disrespectful to my leader for just advising him to do a ward round, there isn't much to say then. By the way, I think you know deep down why I was being sent to the emergency department as a nurse."
"How can a person like you be qualified to be the leader of the hospital? So what if I talk back to you?"
Haward glared at Jimmy and said in a condescending tone.
Before the coma, he definitely dare not talk in such a way to Jimmy, for he couldn't afford to lose the job.
But now, things were different. With the knowledge from the Infinite Medical Book imprinted in his head, he was destined to be an outstanding young doctor. He would make great achievements in his life, wherever he was.
Taken aback by Haward's blatant defiance, Jimmy was at a loss of words.
"What's going on? How did he know that it was I who deliberately assign him to the emergency room? Did he know that I accepted bribery?"
A tinge of nervousness flashed across Jimmy's face, and his eyes were filled with sheer maliciousness.
Accepting bribery, abusing power, exploiting talents... If all these were exposed to the public, his reputation would be tarnished.
Ring, ring!
At this very moment, Jimmy's phone suddenly rang.
Jimmy's pupils dilated when he saw the caller on the screen. He immediately put on a humble smile and said in the most respectful tone, "Hello, Director."
"Chief Liu, there is a special patient in the intensive care unit. No matter where you are right now, put all your work aside and come to the intensive care unit immediately to conduct an emergency consultation."
From the other end of the line came an authoritative old voice in a very serious tone.
Haward was dumbfounded at this. "The identity of the patient must be very extraordinary," he thought.
After all, the First People's Hospital of River City was a public hospital, and the director of the hospital was considered equivalent to a high ranking government officer.
The patient who could receive such great attention from the director himself must definitely be a special person.
"Yes, yes, Director. I'll go right away,"
Jimmy realized the gravity of the matter and said hurriedly.
After hanging up the phone, Jimmy gave Haward a cold look and trotted away.
