"Ugh, my head hurts so much. Couldn't they have just sent me off properly, this bunch of grandsons really can drink."
Li Zongyue rubbed his forehead as he slowly woke up, thinking...
Wait! My forehead? I can actually touch my own forehead, could it be?
Li Zongyue suddenly got up from the bed, bouncing around the room, touching his left hand with his right and his right hand all over his body. He occasionally muttered words.
"Wow, I have a body again, such a realistic feeling, a hundred times better than being a soul."
"Yes, this is all done legally. Yama is indeed a man of his word..."
With that sentence, Li Zongyue deflated for some reason, slowly sitting back on the bed, his expression said it all.
"Damn you, Yama, insisting on giving me this merit book. If I fail to fulfil it, my physical body will be limited to 30 years, if I complete it, my life is extended by 100 years on top of the original. Ugh, it angers me. And to think I was your secretary for so many years, Yama, without a shred of consideration for our past relationship. Humph!"
Thinking about this, Li Zongyue had a thought, and a golden, glowing book appeared in his right hand, three big characters "Merit Book" written on the cover. With a slight flip through his left hand, a few rows of text appeared on the page.
"Help others to enrich my heart, record your merits in the merit book. One page for one ghost, one ghost for one merit; cross the ghost, record as merit; all reincarnation grievances are the foundations, investigating and proving the truth; faking not permitted, be careful when using the ghost whip."
Seeing this, Li Zongyue revealed a sly grin at the corner of his mouth.
"Hey! Little merit boy, you're trying to pull a fast one on your bro? Have you forgotten who took you to glimpse women ghosts bathing? Who snuck you sips of fine wine? You've forgotten..."
At this point, the text on the merit book's page changed. The original text was gone, and new lines emerged.
"Anything connected with your karma counts. Hmm, Brother Li, you're a big baddy."
Seeing this, Li Zongyue chuckled and gently patted the merit book, saying: "Relax, little merit. You simply don't understand the wonders of the mortal world. This time, this master has finally gained a physical body. Isn't it a shame to not revel in the human world after so many years of labor in the netherworld? There will naturally be benefits for you then."
Calmly, Li Zongyue began sorting through the memories of this body stored in his mind. At least, the name was the same, the King of Hell must have had some conscience.
Li Zongyue, male, 20 years old, lived in Gaoshan Village, a remote and impoverished mountainous area of Linyi County, Haitian Province. His parents died when he was young, from an accident involving falling off a cliff while gathering medicinal herbs in the mountains. Since then, he's been raised and nurtured by his elder sister.
Thinking of his sister, Li Zongyue couldn't help but admire her. She was truly a powerful woman. Not only did she manage farming, cooking, and laundry chores, but she also took care of her brother. Whenever she could find some free time, she would read independently. Every time she encountered difficulties, she would run to ask the only educated person in the village, the village chief. Remarkably, she made it into Tongguang University in the capital city of Yunjing in Huaxia - a prestigious university.
There were three reasons why Li Zongyue still remained in Gaoshan Village.
First, the family was very poor.
Second, he didn't want to burden his sister.
Third, he too wished to get into a university like his sister did.
"He has willpower, he has aspirations. This really resembles me. But why would such a good child..."
However, Li Zongyue's expression slowly softened. The original soul of this body already scattered, and the final memory in his mind was nothing more than infinite terror and a bright red beam of light.
"Could it be? I barely get a new body and there's already a case. They really don't give me a break."
Getting up and stretching his body, he only then had the chance to examine the room. The walls and ground were made of dirt, a few wooden pillars, a kang bed behind him, and nothing else.
Suddenly, a rustle sounded from the yard. Li Zongyue went out to see, and the sight before him instantly fired him up.
He saw a man in the yard who had picked up two bundles of firewood and was about to walk away. Upon spotting Li Zongyue, the man bared his fangs and scolded, "What are you gawking at, you fool, I'll break your leg if you keep watching! Also, this firewood is running low, you better chop more."
Li Zongyue stepped forward, raised his right hand and raged, cursing at the man.
"Damn you, the front foot gets killed by someone, and then the back foot gets bullied by you. Do you think I'm a football, anybody can kick around at will? Put down the firewood right now or you'll lose your life. I mean it."
The man carrying firewood is named Zhang Hao. Ever since Li Zongyue's sister went out to school, Zhang Hao has not only often bullied Li Zongyue but also sporadically exploited his labor.
Zhang Hao has never seen such an aggressive Li Zongyue, momentarily stunned on the spot. When he recovers, he is even more furious. Regardless of whether Li Zongyue is possessed or has gone mad, he's determined to teach him a lesson.
With that in mind, he throws down two bundles of firewood, preparing to deal with Li Zongyue.
But this wasn't the Li Zongyue he knew before! Seeing the right hand lifted by Li Zongyue pointing towards the open space next to Zhang Hao, he uttered a sentence that made Zhang Hao stop his steps once again.
"Show yourself and give this fool a good scare!"
Zhang Hao looks suspiciously at his side, seeing nothing. He is almost three feet tall with fury. However, Li Zongyue doesn't stop pointing and speaking,
"Damn, you, stop pointing, I'm talking about you, as long as you scare him well, I'll let you reincarnate into a good life if I'm pleased."
Zhang Hao thinks this boy must have gone mad. He decides to leave the firewood and hurries away, lest any mishap falls on his responsibility.
Thinking of this, Zhang Hao turns around to leave, but he almost bumps into someone. Wait a minute, when did someone stand behind me? Moreover, this guy’s face is so pale, he doesn't look like one of us from the village. Zhang Hao looks down, planning to pass by, but then he freezes.
To confirm something, he slowly lifted his head, then the pale face smiled at him, Zhang Hao gave a forced smile, then fainted.
Seeing this, Li Zongyue gave a thumbs up to the half-emerged ghost and praised.
"Nice job, kiddo! You scared him just the right amount. You have potential; you're worth training."
After saying that, Li Zongyue seemed to whisper something, and the space in front of him began to distort. A white shadow appeared after a while, and a chilling voice came from within.
"Secretary Li, can I help you with anything?"
Li Zongyue pointed to the little ghost and smiled, "Little White, this little ghost is very promising. You can take him away and give him a position as an infernal messenger."
The moment that white figure appeared, this little devil was already scared to the point of lying flat on the ground. My goodness! Just by moving his lips he had summoned the Lord White Ghost. Could it be that I stepped into a big prize of ghost dung when I left the house today?
"The lowly one takes his order."
With that, the white figure wrapped around the little devil and disappeared, leaving Zhang Hao lying on the ground, still foaming at the mouth.
Back in the room, Li Zongyue summoned the Book of Virtue again. He had no choice, that fellow had started making a fuss again.
Sure enough, the text on the cover page had changed.
Humph! The paths of humans and ghosts have always been separate, maintaining their own boundaries. If you act this way, you will be punished by the King of Hell.
Li Zongyue had a dark expression on his face as he said sternly,
"What does a child know? I can recite the rules and regulations of the underworld backwards, you can rest easy! What kind of man am I, Li Zongyue? I definitely wouldn’t do something excessive."
