Chapter

At the end of autumn in the North, it is precisely when the harvest time is fading and winter is beckoning, a small, dilapidated house at the edge of Heartland village is witnessing a "continuation of life."

April vaguely woke up. Her head was aching, her stomach was churning and she felt nauseous. Before even opening her eyes, she detected a choking smell circulating in the air.

Is that gas? Am I suffering from gas poisoning? Oh my God! I don't want to die. She tried her best to force open her eyes with all of her strength, but only managed to squeeze them open a fraction, enough to barely make out the scene before her.

She didn’t have time to observe the surroundings. She only caught sight of a door and desperately wanted to get out. She had not even the strength to stand up. All she could do was crawl. Every inch she advanced felt like losing a layer of her skin. Finally, making it to the entrance and pushing the door, thankfully opening it.

"Help!" she cried before blacking out and fainting once again...

"Poor April, her good-for-nothing husband divorced her, even chose to be with her own cousin, how...how shameless! How could April not resort to suicide considering this disgrace?"

“I wish our sympathies could help, April got saved this time but how will she carry on as a woman with a child all by herself?"

April, in fact, had already woken up but her heavy eyelids prevented her from opening her eyes. She had no choice but to listen to the conversation. Initially, she thought it was a chat between two patients from the next bed, but a flood of memories revealed the truth. She had been reborn.

April was the only girl in the village who had managed to reach high school. She was diagnosed pregnant during her college entrance medical examination and as a result, had to abandon her studies. Later, she returned to the village and married the father of her child, Jack Adams, and then...

The scumbag, Jack, cheated on her with her own cousin and divorced her, revealing a massive secret... Therefore, to protect her child's reputation, she chose to leave home penniless.

A woman, a child, a pair of run-down rooms, and she chose to end her life.

"April, are you awake?" Valerie noticed April’s eyelids flutter. "Aunt Valerie, am I... alive?"

This was Valerie, a next-door neighbor who was very good to her. She had shown a lot of care for April over the years.

"You silly child, if your parents were to see you like this, could they rest easy? You need to live, child." April was someone Valerie watched grow up. She cared for her when her parents were busy and hence, treated April as her own daughter.

April was always a free-spirited optimist. "Aunt Valerie, I get it. Don't worry, I won't seek death any longer." Since it has come, then let it be. She already remembered that it was the end of the '90s, a time when one could do business freely. Being a person from modern times, she surely wouldn’t starve to death, would she?

"Don't think too much about it, we'll all support you." Aunt Valerie thought April was still in distress and was trying to comfort her.

Before April could respond a voice outside yelled, "Is sister April home?"

"April, don’t get upset. I will get rid of her, that shameless vixen." Valerie's expression turned sour. She was even more worried that April would not be able to handle the stress.

April remembered this person. It was her blood-related cousin. She gave a small smile. The former host might be a pushover, but not her. Since she had taken over the former's life, it was only fair to give her a taste of her own medicine.
