Hua City’s First People's Hospital, famous far and wide. The hospital entrance is always bustling with cars resembling a dragon, most of them for treatment.
Lin Hao is an intern at Hua City’s First People's Hospital. Most of the interns at the First People's Hospital are admitted through connections, yet Lin Hao is unique. He was academically outstanding at school and could obtain a full scholarship every year; he was specially sent here by his school.
Knowing the difficulty of acquiring such an opportunity, Lin Hao worked hard. Even during the scorching summer days, he remained focused during work to prevent any mistakes.
"Doctor Lin, it's time to get off work!" A nurse called out when lunch break arrived.
"Oh, I got it!"
Lin Hao raised his head and responded with a smile. He took out his phone and made a call to his girlfriend. After connecting, he gently said, "Xiaowen, I’m off work. I will pick you up for a meal later, okay?"
"Sounds good!" The voice from the other side of the phone was full of joy, echoing like the silver bell.
Looking at his phone, Lin Hao's face was filled with bliss.
Wang Wen met Lin Hao in college, they became familiar and fell in love in due course. Their peers envied their relationship. Lin Hao cherished his relationship too. Wang Wen was beautiful and generous and to be with her he felt like he had been blessed in his previous life.
Afraid that his girlfriend would become anxious waiting, Lin Hao tidied up, left the hospital, and went to Wang Wen's place of work to wait underneath her office building.
By the time most of the employees in the office had left work, but Lin Hao had not seen his girlfriend yet. Feeling anxious, he decided to go upstairs to find her. Wang Wen was the secretary to the company's CEO. At first, Lin Hao was worried about Wang Wen's job, afraid that the CEO would take advantage of her. But after hearing Wang Wen's description of the CEO, named Wang Qiang, who was a promising young man, he climbed up to the position of general manager at just over thirty, and unlike other CEOs of companies, he wasn't corpulent and lewd; he respected her. Lin Hao slowly began to feel at ease.
Approaching the CEO's office, the door was half-open. Just as Lin Hao was about to knock, Wang Wen walked out. On seeing his girlfriend, Lin Hao's face brimmed with joy.
Wang Wen was taken aback on seeing Lin Hao but soon recovered, her smile was as beautiful as a blooming flower. She took Lin Hao's hand and began walking and chatting.
The pair had been together for years, and Lin Hao failed to notice the panic his girlfriend was trying to hide. Moreover, Wang Wen gave him a different feeling today. Lin Hao was somewhat confused but didn't ask, and walked along with his girlfriend. As they almost reached the staircase, Lin Hao glanced back. Through the half-open office door, he saw a mature man looking at his girlfriend unabashedly.
Lin Hao had a sudden palpitation, as if he had finally realized something.
"What are you doing?" Wang Wen asked coyly.
Only then did Lin Hao come back to his senses, carefully staring into Wang Wen's eyes.
As expected, Wang Wen's gaze was a bit evasive. She brushed her bangs and replied, "Why are you staring at me like that?"
Despite Wang Wen seeming normal, Lin Hao could tell that Wang Wen was hiding something from him. Combining with the bold gaze of the man just now, Lin Hao's heart tightened.
However, Lin Hao didn’t give up yet, wanting to know the real reason.
"Wen," Lin Hao called out softly, "Is there something more between you and your general manager?"
Upon hearing the sound, Wang Wen raised her head. When she saw Lin Hao, her face changed, and her eyes looked panic-stricken, as if she was caught cheating.
Finally, Wang Wen calmed down and coldly said, "How did you find out!"
Seeing Wang Wen's reaction, Lin Hao felt a pang in his heart and managed a weak smile, "Wen, am I overthinking?”
Wang Wen took a deep breath, her expression becoming even colder, "What do you think? It is exactly as you said."
Lin Hao didn’t expect Wang Wen to be so straightforward. The Wang Wen before him felt like a stranger.
"Why?" Lin Hao was still somewhat unwilling. He would rather believe Wang Wen was under duress than accept this fact.
However, Wang Wen's reply was firm, "Why should there always be a reason! Lin Hao, we've been together for so long, yet you can't give me anything. And yet, do you still have the audacity to ask me why?”
"But am I not trying my best? I'm fighting for anything you may want to the best of my ability, I've practically given everything to you…”
"What's the point? Do you think it's enough?" Wang Wen interrupted Lin Hao, her face resolute.
"Since you have seen through it today, I might as well make it clear. What I want, you can't give to me, no matter how hard you try," Wang Wen pointed to the location of the company's top floor executive office, and sharply criticized, "Lin Hao! You take a close look at Wang Qiang, and then look at yourself, what a loser! Even after graduation, you're still an intern. You're not at all qualified to be with me!"
She took out an ancient jade pendant from her newly bought handbag and threw it in front of Lin Hao, "This is a gift you gave me when we were together, now I'm returning it to you. Let's part on good terms. Don’t bother me anymore!"
After saying this, Wang Wen turned to leave. Lin Hao quickly came forward and tightly grasped her hand, begging sorrowfully, "Xiao Wen, don’t be like this. Give me one more chance, will you? I'll work harder to provide the life you've been longing for!"
Wang Wen didn't expect Lin Hao to display such an inability to let go. She appeared a little impatient, forcefully shaking his hand off and saying, "Lin Hao, stop bothering me. We’re from totally different worlds!"
Wang Wen’s words hit Lin Hao’s heart like sharp needles. He stood there, unable to breathe due to the heartache.
Wang Wen worried about Lin Hao continuing to pester her, so she dropped the last bombshell. She pointed at her handbag, questioning in a demanding tone, "Lin Hao, look at this bag!"
Only then did Lin Hao notice Wang Wen’s bag. He remembered that Wang Wen had mentioned it to him earlier. Unable to afford its high price, Lin Hao didn't end up buying it for her. Wang Wen had been upset about it for quite some time.
I should have realised it sooner, Lin Hao thought to himself and let out a self-mocking smile.
"Kid, you better stop pestering xxx now. As she said, you're not qualified to be with her." A mocking voice came from inside the company. A man walked over, looking at him with a sarcastic smile.
"Wang Qiang!"
Lin Hao was taken aback. The man was the same one from the office just now, the young and promising Wang Qiang mentioned by Wang Wen.
It took Lin Hao awhile to regain his senses. Seeing the blatant mocking on the man's face, he roared, "You beast, you stole my Wang Wen!"
"Stole?" Wang Qiang laughed dismissively, handed a slap on Wang Wen's perky buttock, giving it a little squeeze, and casually said, "You wait for me in the car, I'll take you to have some great food later."
Being touched so audaciously in public, Wang Wen's face turned red, but she didn't get angry. Instead, she bashfully lowered her head, a demeanor that Lin Hao only remembered from when they first started dating.
Lin Hao stared hard at Wang Qiang, "Wang Qiang, you knew full well that I was her boyfriend, so why make a move on her?"
"Come on, Lin Hao, didn’t you realize it yet?"
"What do you mean?" Lin Hao was taken aback, unable to comprehend.
Watching Lin Hao's confusion, the derision on Wang Qiang's face grew deeper. He sneered, "What’s an underachieving pauper, like you, to expect love? Daydreaming much, ha ha ha!"
"Bastard!" Lin Hao trembled with anger.
Seeing his reaction, Wang Qiang shrugged it off with a chuckle, patting his shoulder, "Kid, don't blame me for being ruthless. Let's call this a lesson. And here's a parting gift for you."
As Wang Qiang laughed and drove off in his car, Lin Hao paid no attention to his talk of a 'gift.' He watched Wang Qiang leave with an eye full of defiance, especially seeing through the car window, Wang Qiang hands stroking Wang Wen's leg while she blushed with a shy look. An overwhelming sense of heartache and disgust washed over him.
He never thought Wang Wen would finally betray him.
Before, Wang Wen was my everything; now, I have nothing left.
The car sped away, stirring the dust on the ground, leaving Lin Hao standing alone in a bit of a mess.
Although the weather was still hot, Lin Hao felt as cold as an ice cellar, the coldness piercing his bones.
Over the years with Wang Wen, Lin Hao has always given her the best, unwilling to let her down. Who could have imagined today's turn of events.
Lin Hao stood under a tree, in a bit of shock. Eventually, he calmed himself. He bent down to pick up the jade pendant and stroked the smooth lines on it. Although Wang Wen left him, life had to go on. He hoped to channel this pain into his work. This also made him value his job more, because if he also lost his job, he would truly have nothing left.
"Lin Hao! The director is looking for you in his office!"
Not long after he returned to the hospital, a nurse ran over with a message. Without a second thought, Lin Hao finished what he was doing to head to the director's office.
Knocking on the door, Lin Hao walked in, "Director, you wanted to see me?"
The director looked up at Lin Hao, nodded, and spoke, "Lin Hao, I've moved you to the emergency department. Report there this afternoon, I've already spoken with the head nurse."
"What? Director, you want me to be an intern nurse? Why?" Lin Hao looked incredulously at Director Mei.
Upon hearing Lin Hao's inquiry, Director Mei's plump face showed impatience, "What why? You have been in the hospital for a week and should show some progress. But you? You're not devoted nor hardworking. It's already lenient not to kick you out. You even have complaints about being transferred to the emergency department?"
