Roselyn Vance came rushing in from the countryside, dusty and travel-worn, and went straight to the Imperial Grand Hotel before she even had time to catch her breath.
Two days ago, she’d gotten a call from her father, Alphonse Vance, telling her to come to the capital and fulfill the engagement with the eldest son of the Whitmore family.
From the day she was born until now, Alphonse Vance had never cared about her. What made it even more disgusting was that he’d cheated during marriage back then, shattered her mother’s heart, and pushed her into a slow, miserable decline until she died.
And now that the Vance family was in trouble, Alphonse Vance didn’t hesitate for even a second before throwing her out as the sacrifice, planning to trade her marriage to pull the family back from the edge.
Roselyn honestly had no idea where Alphonse Vance got the nerve. How did he still have the face to ask her to win outside support for the Vance family? Please. Their wealth and glory had nothing to do with her, and if the Vance family crashed and burned, that had nothing to do with her either.
So the one thing she needed to do now was simple: make Dorian Whitmore call off this engagement and leave Alphonse Vance, his wife, and their precious children crying in a corner somewhere.
The moment she stepped into the hotel, Natalie Grayson stopped her. "The info’s solid. Dorian Whitmore has been staying in the presidential suite these past few days, but..." Her eyes swept over Roselyn from head to toe, and her expression turned weird. "Are you seriously not changing first? And what’s with your hair? It’s such a mess. Who still wears braids these days? And your freckles—what even is that? Your skin is obviously flawless..."
Roselyn let out a breath. "I’m here to break off an engagement, not go on a blind date with him. Why would I change?"
She pointed at the freckles on her face, looking a little smug. "I just dotted them on. Pretty convincing, right? Looks real enough."
Natalie looked totally confused. "Wait, you’re actually going to cancel it? The Whitmores are top-tier old money in the capital. Do you even know how many women would kill to marry him?"
At first, when Roselyn had asked her about Dorian Whitmore and boldly said she wanted to end the engagement, Natalie had honestly thought she was just acting spoiled after getting lucky. A man that outstanding, and she didn’t want him? Wasn’t that basically a brain glitch?
Roselyn’s face was full of disdain. "I don’t even know him, so why should I marry him? Besides, this was all Alphonse Vance’s idea. The Vance Group is in crisis, and he wants to use my marriage to Dorian Whitmore to save the family. Why on earth should I let him get what he wants?"
Natalie still gave her a quiet warning. "Fine, fine. Just don’t say I didn’t remind you. Some things, once you do them, you can’t undo them."
Roselyn gave a cold laugh. "Good. I want Alphonse Vance to have no way to undo it."
What Natalie actually wanted to say was: don’t miss out on a man as good as Dorian Whitmore. But this girl had one thing filling her head right now—resentment toward the Vance family.
Natalie Grayson was the chairman’s daughter of the Imperial Grand Hotel, and also Roselyn’s best friend. With Natalie pulling strings, Roselyn made it smoothly all the way to the presidential suite on the top floor.
The door was left slightly open, not fully shut.
Roselyn took a deep breath. Since she was already here, she might as well get the job done. She steeled herself and gently pushed the door open. Night had already fallen. No lights were on in the living room, and none were on inside the suite either. The huge room was so quiet it felt eerie, and half the courage Roselyn had gathered on the way over drained out on the spot.
A chill swept over her. Roselyn shivered, her legs going weak, but she still forced herself to call out, "Hello? Is anyone here? Excuse me, does Mr. Whitmore stay here?"
She called twice. Just as she was wondering whether she should leave, a dark figure suddenly shot out from inside the room and dragged her in with one hard yank...
Roselyn’s head spun instantly, the whole world flipping upside down as raw fear swallowed her whole.
