"You are my cute little apple, no amount of love for you is too much……"
In the central city square of Qinghai, a large group of seniors dressed in flamboyant clothes are energetically square dancing. Their faces are filled with joy and their movements are rhythmical.
Wang Wuzhi halted in his steps, a look of lively interest apparent on his face. Eventually, he chose to sit down on a nearby chair, curiously watching.
After a full song, he tilted his head to catch a glimpse of the setting red sun in the sky, and involuntarily yawned, feeling slightly sleepy.
Soon after, the music continued to play, with the sound of coordinated footwork echoing around... while Wang Wuzhi changed into a comfortable position, seeming to doze off with his eyes half-closed.
He wasn't sure how long he was out, but he suddenly opened his eyes. The moment he regained consciousness, his pitch-black eyes flickered coldly, the temperature around him instantly dropped.
But this sudden coldness quickly dissipated; he concealed everything including the change in his eyes. A trace of self-mockery surfaced on Wang Wuzhi's face... he almost forgot that he was back in the city, living an ordinary life.
Subsequently, he shifted his gaze forward. The square dance had ceased, replaced by a noisy crowd gathered together, accompanied by a heart-wrenching sob.
"Please save my granddaughter...... I'm begging you, please save her…..”
He was awakened by the crying. Wang Wuzhi slowly stood up, his eyebrows furrowed, a puzzled look on his face.
What happened?
After a brief moment of contemplation, he hastened his pace to the crowd. Wang Wuzhi, like an eel, swiftly worked his way into the crowd, where he saw an elderly woman wailing, cradling a little girl in her arms whose face was turning purple. She seemed to be at death's door.
The girl's complexion seemed to indicate poisoning. If not treated immediately, the consequences would be unthinkable.
"What are you standing around for? Hurry up and take her to the hospital!"
Someone spoke up anxiously. Clearly, many of the seniors recognized the woman. A few people rushed up to help, while others quickly flagged down taxis from the roadside… however, no car halted.
"It's too late." Someone sighed softly, "The taxi won't stop, and even if we call an ambulance, it would take at least ten minutes."
Everyone understood what was left unsaid. It was clear to see the little girl the woman was cradling in her arms had completely stopped breathing, and chances were slim even if she were to make it to the hospital.
"Put all that aside, get her to the hospital first." An elder snapped, his eyes sweeping over the crowd, "Any of you who can drive, hurry and help get her to the hospital..."
Upon his utterance, the crowd immediately fell silent. No one responded, only watching the crying woman in silence. Perhaps they were indifferent, or felt helpless, or had other reasons...
Desperate sobs from the woman were the only sounds breaking the silence.
Without hesitation, Wang Wu stepped forward. He was a former soldier and although he had retired from the squad, he was not averse to saving a life in such situations.
Without saying a word, he approached and bent over to check, his brows instantly furrowing.
The girl's throat was noticeably swollen, not due to suspected poisoning, but rather it seemed she had swallowed something that was lodged in her throat, causing asphyxiation.
The onlookers immediately became quiet, all eyes on Wang Wu. The woman watched him hopefully, wanting to say something but did not dare to ask.
"Let's lay the girl flat on the ground."
Wang Wu said no more, he and the woman gently placed the girl on the ground. Then, he cast a glance at the woman's trembling hands, shaking his head to dismiss the idea of her helping. He immediately turned to the crowd around.
"I need someone’s help, preferably a young person."
At these words, many among the observers shared glances, expressions complicated, and everything became even quieter... Wang Wu was momentarily taken aback, his gaze sweeping over the crowd, but no one stepped forward.
Witnessing this, the woman at the side shouted at the crowd in a voice hoarse from crying, "Please save my granddaughter, she must be saved, I beg all of you on my knees."
Having said that, she knelt down, ready to kowtow.
"Auntie, don't panic yet."
Suddenly, a voice came through. A girl frantically pushed her way through the crowd and walked quickly to the front. Looking at Wang Wu, she stuttered, "Can... Can I try?"
She was a strikingly pretty girl, about twenty years old, sporting a ponytail. She wore an oversized white T-shirt and blue casual pants that accentuated her slender legs. All in all, she emitted a youthful and appealing vibe.
Simultaneously, a young man stepped out of the crowd. Handsomely good-looking, charismatic, he wore what seemed like simple clothing but was incredibly expensive.
The crowd initially thought he came to help. However, he didn't move closer. Instead, he stood at the edge of the crowd and cautioned, "Su Su, come back. The kid is clearly in bad shape. If you can't cure him, they might push all the blame onto you."
Hushed silence followed his statement.
People were taken aback by his words. Many old folks glared at him angrily, yet some in the crowd agreed with him. Wang Wu appeared somewhat startled, then shook his head helplessly, his face a complex expression.
It's a case of "to each their own", a situation that no one can change. But, shouldn't everyone carry a baseline for humanitarian ethics?
"Young lady, please don't go. I beg you, I'll kowtow to you..."
The woman seemed to clutch at her last straw. But before she could finish her sentence, the young man coldly interrupted, "What's the use of kowtowing? If the kid dies, don't try pushing the blame onto Su Su. These troublesome civilians nowadays... "
With that, he turned to the girl, "Su Su, don't get involved with this mess. If they're trying to scam us, they'll squeeze us dry without leaving a trace!"
"Gong Fan, can you please shut up!"
The girl looked up and shot an icy glare at the young man, then turned to Wang Wu, "What do you need me to do?"
The young man was effectively silenced by her cold stare. A trace of hurt flickered across his face. Noticing that the girl was ignoring him, his eyes involuntarily landed on her chest. As the girl was crouching down, her loose, oversized T-shirt revealed a slight glimpse of what was underneath, causing him to inadvertently swallow. His expression immediately turned indifferent once again.
On the first day of college, Gong Fan was captivated by the exquisite looks of a girl named Su Su at the school gate. He launched a vigorous pursuit, but to no avail, as she ignored him.
After the end of the military training, he shamelessly followed Su Su to her neighborhood. Hoping to impress her with his family background, he was, however, met with an unpleasant incident.
At this moment, Wang Wu has his left hand on a little girl's abdomen, calmly saying, "When I push it to her throat, you have to open your mouth quickly. Can you do it?"
"Yes." The girl quickly replied, her right hand decisively cupping the little girl's cheeks, her action was surprisingly adept, which slightly surprised Wang Wu.
Without delay, he harshly pressed down on the little girl's abdomen with his right hand, immediately followed by a swift push up to her lower throat, and the bulge on the girl's throat became more noticeable.
"Open your mouth."
The girl has already prepared. Upon his command, she pinched the little girl's cheeks forcibly to open her mouth.
Just as she opened the mouth, Wang Wu's thumb and index finger of his left hand bent slightly, then gave a light flick. With a "pop", a round object flew out of the mouth, falling beside them.
On closer look, it was a patterned glass ball. The child was about four or five years old, probably swallowed it while playing, which got stuck in her throat.
"Good."
People around them also heaved a sigh of relief, and spontaneously started clapping. That's how people are, always ready to praise something beautiful. Initially, people had mixed feelings but it wasn't out of any ill-intentions, just a reaction to the social phenomenon.
However, the cheers soon subsided when they saw that Wang Wu hadn't stood up, his right hand was pressing on the child's heart area, and he was furrowing his brows.
Seeing this, the girl who was helping extended a cautious finger to feel under the little girl's nose and instantly changed her color, quickly withdrawing her hand.
She didn't utter a word, but a look of panic surfaced on her delicate face, her beautiful eyes blinked, holding back tears.
Such a scene abruptly tensed the surrounding atmosphere.
"No, no... my Yueyue..."
The woman's face turned pale, filled with despair. She lowered her head to look at her granddaughter on the ground as tears streamed down her face, letting out a heartbreaking wail of despair.
The expressions on the faces of the crowd around her were complex. However, apart from sympathy, none could help.
At this time, a cold laugh came from Gong Fan on the side. Not caring about the feelings of others, he loudly said, "Let's go, Su Su. You've already done your best. Someone can bear the witness..."
He didn't care about the life or death of the child, even feeling a bit of gloating over the unsuccessful rescue. In fact, he hoped that the other party would defraud Su Su, thereby giving him a chance to flaunt his background.
People cast angry glances at him, but more eyes were focused on the lifeless child in the middle of the scene and the woman who was grieving for her.
Everyone was lamenting. After all, the little girl was only three or four years old. Her life had hardly begun before it already came to an end.
"Help take off her shirt."
Wang Wu suddenly spoke, at the same time, pulled out a purse from his arms, opened it, revealing a row of silver glinting needles.
"Alright."
The woman was obviously stunned, but quickly reacted. Wiping her eyes, she stepped forward and proficiently helped the child undress.
Then, Wang Wu lightly pressed on several spots on her chest, especially her heart area, probing repeatedly, even finally putting his ear up to her chest to listen.
For a full minute, he repeated these actions.
The young girl's heart had stopped, but it was just in a state of apparent death. Of course, not everyone could easily treat this condition.
Even for Wang Wu, this was no joke. If it were an adult, he wouldn't have had many concerns, but for a child, he had to consider her load capacity.
However, his actions drew a sarcastic remark, "Brother, stop pretending. No matter if she's dead or not, hurry up and take her to the hospital."
