Li Ling stared at the unknown brand of cellphone he had just spent two hundred yuan on, feeling utterly frustrated.
What a terrible day it had been for him.
He had planned to take the day off from his part-time job, following his grandfather's instruction, to meet with his arranged marriage partner.
But as he was passing the Longhua Bridge, he noticed a car plunged into the river. Without any hesitation, he leapt forward and saved the person inside. Yet, his belongings on the riverside, including his phone and wallet, were stolen in the meantime.
Truth be told, he deeply regretted his bravery at that moment. It seemed, no good deed goes unpunished.
His stolen wallet contained the five thousand yuan he had earned from his summer job, intended to pay his university's registration fees!
"I'm at my wits' end. What the hell is happening?"
Just thinking about the fact that he needed to report to school in two weeks made his situation worse. Especially now he was without payment!
How could Li Ling not feel upset?
And that wasn't the end of it. The secondhand cellphone he had bought with the remaining two hundred yuan in his bank card was a counterfeit too!
He hadn't even inserted the SIM card, yet the phone was already ringing with push notification beeps.
"August 25, a householder in the Qiyang Street of Nanshan District in Longhua City got into a fight with the landlord, causing a bloody conflict."
"August 22, Good News! A lottery player at the Bailong Town, Haifeng Road lottery station won the first prize from a scratch-off lottery ticket."
Looking at these two news updates, Li Ling was both furious and amused.
These were two pieces of news pushed by an app called "The Headlines of Tomorrow." It seemed like a knockoff of "The Headlines of Today", even the icon was a knockoff.
"Even without internet access, it still pushes news to me. That's incredible. And what's with this date? It's just August 19th, why are you already pushing me news from August 22nd?" Li Ling was completely flabbergasted.
But this outrageous title had piqued his interest, and he was really curious to see what the content was.
Upon opening and reading the first piece of news, Li Ling was stunned, because the location of the bloody brawl mentioned in the news was a place he was all too familiar with, where he had lived during his three years of high school.
The news said that a resident had found 8300 yuan in the cavity of the room's wall. The landlord claimed the money was his, while the resident thought that since he had rented the room, the money was his. Unable to reach an agreement, both of them engaged in a fight and ended up in the hospital.
There were also some pictures attached to the news, and those scenes were too familiar to Li Ling.
How could he not be familiar with a place where he had lived for over three years?
But he had lived there for three years and never found any hidden space.
"That's simply absurd." He immediately closed the app and prepared to uninstall this rubbish app, but exclaimed, "Damn it! I can't uninstall this rogue software! This is infuriating!”
Having no other choice - it was normal for a second-hand phone bought for 200 yuan to have some issues - Li Ling resigned himself to the situation.
He walked into a mobile phone store to report the loss and reissue his Sim card. Just as he inserted the reissued Sim card into his phone, a series of messages came in with a 'ding dong' sound, all of which were missed call alerts.
Of these, three were from his grandfather and eleven were from his landlord.
Li Ling quickly called his grandfather back and explained the day's events.
His grandfather didn't say much, as the other party had also stood Li Ling up, and had rescheduled the meeting to the day after tomorrow noon.
After hanging up the call with his grandfather, Li Ling then made a call to his landlord.
"Li Ling, what the hell are you up to! I've been calling you so many times without getting through, why aren't you gone yet, the new tenant is about to arrive! Don't make me throw away your junk!" The landlord's loud voice came through the phone.
Li Ling originally wanted to explain today's situation to the landlord, but he didn't expect the landlord to drive him away.
"Landlord, isn't it inappropriate to evict me at this time? The lease isn't up yet, is it?" Li Ling frowned.
The landlord gave a cold laugh and haughtily said, "The lease isn't up? Leap month this year! You got even more bargain!"
With that, he hung up the phone.
Li Ling was choked by the other party's words, it was clear they had no intention of reasoning.
"When bad luck strikes, even drinking water can choke."
Tuition lost!
Phone stolen!
Now, to be driven out by the landlord!
What is happening!
"Ah." Li Ling looked at the room he had lived in for more than three years, sighed, and could only start packing. He hoped he could stay at a classmate's house for a few days, as he figured out a solution.
At this time, he couldn't help but remember the news alert he had received before.
With an attitude of giving it a try, he carefully started looking.
A few minutes later, sure enough, he found a hollow brick in the wall. Upon tapping with a finger, an empty sound announced the discovery.
Li Ling's heart pounded with excitement.
He fetched tools and pried the few bricks from the wall. As he hoped, there was a small wooden box tucked away within the wall.
Trembling, he removed the box and opened it. His eyes widened in surprise.
A stack of red banknotes.
Counting, Li Ling found there was 8,300 yuan.
At this moment, he remembered the news that "Tomorrow's Headlines" had pushed to him. The location was accurate, and so was the amount!
Except that it happened a week earlier than it was supposed to.
"So does this mean that this money was actually found by other tenants a week later, but because I saw the push notification from Tomorrow's Headlines, I discovered it in advance? Does this also mean that the bloody brawl that was supposed to happen in the future won't occur?" Li Ling thought, growing increasingly animated.
The money most certainly didn't belong to the landlord. If it did, he wouldn't have had the chance to find it.
The house was too old, having had dozens of tenants come and go. Li Ling himself had been living there for three years and thus had no hope of finding the rightful owner.
So Li Ling had no qualms about pocketing the money.
"Ding-dong, host has successfully participated in the news, Tomorrow's Headlines system activated!"
"Binding in progress...”
"Binding successful! One gift pack received."
"Ding-dong, host has successfully participated in the news, completion 100%, earned one chance to draw a lottery, gained 2 points, points mall now open."
Li Ling listened to the mechanical voice ringing in his mind; it took him quite a while to figure out what had just happened.
High school studies had been tough, and Li Ling's academic performance wasn't outstanding. Sometimes, when he got tired of studying, he would read novels to relieve his boredom. He was no stranger to the concept of a 'system' often found in these novels but he had never imagined it would actually fall upon him one day!
"I'm about to turn my luck around!"
"Haha, good often begets good! Let's see what's in the gift box!" Li Ling was brimming with excitement.
"Opening of gift box succeeded, obtained critical draw benefit. You'll have a high chance of obtaining a rare prize when you draw."
Since there was a chance to draw a prize, why wait? Time to start drawing right away!
"Drawing benefit activated, drawing successful, obtained Insight Spectacles!"
Insight Spectacles?
