It was a bright sunny day. The sun shone brightly and its golden rays shone on the sea making the sea look like an enormous pool of wonder.
Great waves tossed and turn with great force rushing as they collide with the earth, soaking the soft sand. The sea seemed to be howling as every wave grew as tall as a mountain. Slowly, the water creeps forward, then lazily seeps back into the vast ocean, only to do the same over and over again.
Colton was sitting on a rock and he watched his family run happily around the beach. His step-sister was waving and beckoning him to come to play but he ignored her and was watching the waves dance happily to the music of the winds.
"Colton, come over!" Natasha called out again but Colton acted like he didn't hear her. He turned and focused his gaze on the waves instead; completely ignoring her.
"Mom, see. Colton won't talk to me." Natasha went to her mother to complain.
"Nat darling, how many times do I have to tell you that we have to give him some time to accept us?
Charlotte explained lovingly to little Natasha but disagreed.
"Mom, you've been saying that for the past five years. Yet, he doesn't seem to want to accept us," Natasha grumbled. "How much longer before he learns to accept us?
Natasha was tired of hearing that. Every time she tries to go to Colton, he just ignores her and acts as if she doesn't exist.
"Nat dear, just give him some time, okay? Charlotte was trying to make Natasha understand but it seems the little girl already lost hope of ever playing or speaking to her brother.
"How much time, Mom? Or is he going to be this way with us forever?
"He won't," Michael Chapman added, as he patted Natasha's cheek.
He arrived there to hear the conversation between the both of them.
"Dad!" Natasha ran happily into his arms and he kissed her head.
"Don't worry dear, your brother will come around soon." He explained with love.
"Are you sure, Dad? Natasha raised her head to look at her father.
"Of course darling. Don't you trust me? Michael smiled.
He wants his kids to get along. He wants to keep them happy and good with each other but he doesn't seem to know how to go about it. Especially when Colton has detached himself from everyone.
"I trust Dad the most in the whole world." Natasha pulled Micheal and he leaned to her height so she could kiss him.
"And Dad loves you the most in the whole world." Michael returned the kiss with double kisses to her cheeks.
"Nat, go call Colton, it's time to cut the cake." Charlotte Chapman said, but Natasha refused.
"I won't go. He won't speak to me anyway, so why should I bother him?
"Nat, you....." Charlotte couldn't believe that despite the coaxing, Natasha still wouldn't go to Colton.
"Leave her, I'll go call him." Micheal offered and he released Natasha and went towards Colton.
Colton Chapman was seven years old when his mother died. His father got married two months after his mother's death and he brought home a daughter who was five years old.
The girl was said to be his sister.
Shouldn't siblings be from the same mother? Little Colton wondered.
However, he kept it to himself.
Though, he was seven years old; Colton understood immediately that his father had cheated on his mother when she was alive.
He could remember the doctor's words clearly when he said his mother died of depression.
He had gone home to his dictionary to find the meaning of depression. But even though he got the meaning of the word from the dictionary, he couldn't understand it. Because his mother was always happy. So how could she have been depressed?
However, the day his father brought home his new wife and daughter he knew then that they were the reason behind his mother's depression.
Hence, he hated his father for being unfaithful and also his so-called wife and daughter for sending his mother to an early grave.
He became introverted and he withdrew himself from the world, locking himself away from everything and everyone.
The visit to the beach was to celebrate Colton's Twelve years birthday but the birthday celebrant was sitting detached from where the birthday was being celebrated.
"Col," Michael called from behind him, but Colton didn't respond to him as well.
Michael sat on the rock beside him and watched the waves with him.
His heart ached to see his son become so cold and detached. He wished there was something he could do but everything he tried was futile.
Colton just wouldn't speak to him.
"You know, when I was your age, I also enjoyed watching the waves," Micheal spoke in a low voice. "It's my favorite part of the beach."
Michael was hoping to get Colton's attention as he spoke but Colton's face dimmed and he fixed his gaze on the beach; ignoring his father.
Michael kept talking on and on but Colton didn't spare him a glance. It was as if he didn't notice him at all. Micheal shook his head and sighed.
It was still the same. Nothing he does will ever be enough.
How will he get his son back? How will he pull him out of the darkroom he's locked himself in?
Michael took his hand and was about to say something but seeing Colton's look lifeless made him feel lost.
He was lost for words. He didn't what to say to him. Charlotte waved at him and only then did he remember the reason for which he had gone there.
He stood up and pats Colton's head. "Come cut the cake, Col."
