“Please don’t drink too much after work, honey. Don’t forget that I’ve prepared some hangover soup and handed it to your assistant!” Laura Reed texted as she walked down the street.
Just like the thousands of texts she had previously sent; this one had also gone unnoticed.
She calmly put her phone away and reasoned that Rafael Campbell, her husband, was simply too busy with work and couldn’t afford to look at his phone.
They’d been married for two years, but she had never doubted him or questioned his actions even though he was frequently out for work or working late into the night.
That was the kind of person she was, and she trusted him with all her heart.
With her mind at ease, she was just about to turn around and leave when a luxurious car came rushing by, knocking her to the ground.
Laura yelled in fear as both her phone and purse flew away from her.
Suddenly, the door of the car opened and a woman dressed in a chic suit walked out with a worried face. She quickly approached the injured Laura and asked, “Oh my god, I’m so sorry! Are you all right?”
Laura checked herself and discovered that she only had grazes on one elbow and knee, while her bones and muscles were intact. Fortunately for her, the car had an excellent braking system and managed to stop before causing some serious damage.
“I’m terribly sorry,” said the woman, looking quite flustered. “I was in a rush because I was trying to catch my husband who’s cheating on me right now. If you’re okay with it, do you mind coming with me? I’ll repay you once I’m done catching him in the act.”
“Catching him… cheating on you?” Laura repeated, unable to resist the call of gossip. “Sure, I’m in!”
The woman helped her into the car and sped off, quickly arriving at the entrance of the city’s most elegant hotel.
After getting out of the car, the two of them pushed open the door and entered.
Realizing that she had forgotten which room her husband and his mistress had booked, the woman began browsing through her information.
Out of nowhere, Laura asked her for her birth date and time, cleared her mind of all distracting thoughts, made a quick calculation, and precisely provided an address after a few seconds, “5th floor. Room 520.”
“How did you know?!” the woman asked, dumbfounded.
“It’s just a hunch”, Laura retorted. “What are you waiting for? Let’s hurry up and catch him red-handed!”
Thinking of her cheating husband, the woman lost interest in that minor detail and rushed into the elevator with Laura following closely behind.
Right then and there, she sighed and said, “I really appreciate you being here with me. To be honest, my husband doesn’t like it when I pry into his affairs, so I was a bit scared to come alone.”
As she said this, she grabbed Laura’s hand and added, “I’ll give you some extra compensation later. Consider it a reimbursement for the trip.”
Without warning, the elevator doors finally opened.
Thinking about her husband, the woman walked straight to room 520.
This hotel wasn't cheap. It cost tens of thousands of dollars to stay for a single night, which meant that those who could afford to book a room were either wealthy or influential.
Just as Laura leisurely followed her, she noticed out of the corner of her eye that the door to room 521 wasn't completely closed, but slightly ajar, allowing her to see the interior of the room from her position.
Initially, she only saw a man lazily sitting on a sofa in the center of the room with a woman in his arms, but then it hit her… That man was her husband!
The woman was leaning lovingly into Rafael’s embrace, smiling bashfully, her purity mingling with a flirtatious allure.
Amid the cheers of the crowd, she raised a glass of red wine to his lips. Maneuvering past her arm, he grabbed her hand and allowed her to guide him as he indulged in a kind of two-handed drink.
This seemed to strike Laura like a thunderbolt, leaving her stunned on the spot, her body trembling uncontrollably.
At that moment, she felt as though her two-year-long marriage was nothing more than a joke.
While her husband was out having a good time with another woman, she, like a complete fool, stayed at home fretting over his health and even prepared some soup for him…
Laura bit her lower lip, staring unblinkingly at the two figures inside the room.
The worst part was that the woman clinging to Rafael was none other than her parents' adopted daughter, Ella Reed.
Before her biological parents found her, Ella enjoyed the exclusive love and pampering of Laura’s family, and now she was laying her hands on her husband.
Meanwhile, the men in the room kept talking.
“Ella, I don’t know if anyone has told you this, but while you were abroad, Rafael was pining for you and kept mentioning your name every single day.”
“That’s right, he only cares about you. In fact, if it hadn’t been for Laura’s interference back then, the two of you would’ve been together much sooner.”
“She may be part of the Reed family, but everyone considers her to be nothing but a country bumpkin!”
“In any case, now that Rafael has personally brought you back from overseas, your true love can finally blossom! He should hurry up and kick Laura out of his life as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will be very annoying for you to have her around.”
“Ella, Rafael only married Laura to protect you.”
“Exactly. If not for that, that cunning woman would have definitely stopped you from studying abroad and bullied you even more. Now that you're back, he doesn't have to put up with her anymore.”
The men were chiming in one after another, speaking highly of Rafael, which made Ella's face beam with joy. She batted her sparkling eyes looking at Rafael and asked in a flirtatious voice, “Are they telling me the truth?”
Rafael's facial features were sharp and striking and he exuded an aura of dignity when he was serious. Additionally, he was only dressed in a white shirt, the top two buttons undone, barely revealing the big muscles underneath.
Meeting Ella’s questioning gaze, he slightly furrowed his brows and replied, “I've already asked the lawyer to draft the divorce agreement.”
After hearing his response, Ella felt dissatisfied.
If he had just started drafting the agreement, when would the two of them actually get divorced?
After all, she couldn’t wait to move into Rafael’s house and kick that despicable Laura out herself!
At that moment, Laura, who was still standing outside, emitted an incredulous cold laugh and muttered, “Divorce…?”
They’ve been married for two years. She thought Rafael had married her because he truly loved her.
She definitely didn’t expect he would be capable of doing all of that for someone like Ella.
He’s been with her for the last two years; Laura simply didn’t know it. Ultimately, her feelings and her dedication to the marriage were all in vain.
“Whatever…” she said, throwing her head back and sighing as if she had been bottling something up for the past two years.
Bang!
All of a sudden, the door of room 521 thrust open, grabbing everyone by surprise. “Who do you think you…?! Is that Laura?”
As soon as they recognized who it was, the curse words lingering on their lips were forcibly swallowed back down, replacing their angered expressions with ones of intrigued anticipation. “Laura, what are you doing here?”
The lighting in the private room was somewhat dim, making it hard to see the expression on Laura's face, whose back was perfectly straight as she stared unwaveringly at Rafael.
“So, is there anything you want to explain to me?”
